Nursing Home Abuse

Elder abuse occurs when harm is brought upon a senior citizen by someone who is caring for them. Typically elder abuse incidents occur while the elderly are residing in nursing homes or assisted living facilities. Though it is alarming to think about, nursing home abuse is a common occurrence and may affect you or a loved one. With the elderly population on the rise due to aging baby-boomers, more and more of the U.S. population will be in the care of nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

Nursing home and assisted living staff are often underpaid, overworked and poorly trained. This combination may lead to a highly stressful work environment where abuse and negligence often takes place. To make matters worse, managers are often aware that there are incidents of abuse and neglect in their facilities. Negligence and abuse can happen in any nursing home facility; even the most seemingly clean and professional facilities can foster neglect and abuse.

The elderly are very vulnerable and often do not have a voice when it comes to abuse. They are often incapable or even unwilling to let someone know that they are being abused or neglected. There are physical signs that a loved one is being abused, but sometimes abuse can be mental or emotional. If you think you or an elder relative are a victim of nursing home abuse, here are some signs to look for:

Unusual wounds, sores, cuts and/or abrasions
Changes in weight, appearance and/or hygiene
Physical or emotional withdrawal
Missing personal items
Unusual financial transactions
If you suspect that you, or a loved one, are the victim of elder abuse or neglect you should seek the assistance of an attorney immediately.
