Purpose of Child Dependency Proceedings

In Florida, it is the goal of dependency courts to keep families together whenever possible. However, the safety of the child is of the utmost importance. Children are usually kept in foster homes until their case is completed for their own protection. The court tries to keep the child in one home until a permanent home can be decided upon. Any minor child under the age of eighteen can be taken from his or her parents by the state if the parents are suspected of abuse or neglect. The primary goals of dependency court are:

To protect children
To provide children with stable, loving environments to grow up in
To keep families together whenever possible
To treat both parents and children with dignity and respect, never assuming guilt before it is proven
To respect the diversity of different cultures and different methods of childrearing
To value every child like their own
Whenever possible, dependency proceedings work not to assign blame, but to actually try to resolve any problems in the home. Social workers work with parents and children through dependency court to correct issues in the home and improve the parent child relationship. This is done in the hope of keeping families together as much as possible, but some problems simply can’t be fixed.
